We met Ricky Saturday morning around 9:00. (I don’t think he was thrilled about leaving early, but he realized Phillip and I are serious about this sightseeing/exploring thing – leave early, spend all day out! Haha, he admit it was worth it!) We took a taxi to Slough train station, bought an all day travel pass, and took the train into London. We went to Westminster Abbey first. Phillip took a tour of it when he was here in high school, but Ricky and I hadn’t been inside. It was amazing. We weren’t allowed to take pictures inside. That’s really sad because words seriously can’t begin to do this place justice. It’s incredible. A lot of royalty and other famous people are buried inside. That still seems so odd to me. Ricky did manage to take one picture of Isaac Newton’s grave!!!
After the tour, we headed to Hard Rock Café for lunch. The London Hard Rock is the original Hard Rock!!! I think that’s really cool!! We really enjoyed our expensive lunch and our chocolate milkshakes!!! :-) Ricky had a blue frozen drink that looked cool too! From the Hard Rock gift shop, you can take a tour of what used to be the Queen’s vault. Now they have more rockstar items in there, like the rest of Hard Rock Café. It was pretty neat to be in what was once the vault though!
Then we found Hyde Park, which is where Princess Diana’s memorial fountain is. We wandered around the huge park (had to look at a park map twice) till we found it. The fountain is amazing. It looks nothing like a normal fountain. It flows in a huge circle. There are bridges crossing the fountain in a few spots so you can walk on the grass inside the circle too. The fountain has different patterns/designs/cuttings along the way to make the water flow differently in some parts than others. Some parts ripple, some have bubbles coming up, some go really fast, some flow down steps. It’s really pretty! There’s a sign saying you can sit on the edge and “wave” your hands and feet in the water, so we had to feel it! It was COLD!
Finally, we walked to Harrod’s…the HUGE department store. We decided each floor of this place was probably about the size of super walmart, or maybe bigger! There were 7 floors!!! (I think…I lost count actually, but pretty sure there were 7!) We didn’t even make it to all of the floors. We saw the toys, the baby stuff, the sporting goods, and the food – restaurants, little shops, etc. This place is incredible. We saw a rocking horse that cost several thousand Pounds!!!! Craziness!!!! We sure can’t afford anything in there!
We were all so worn out after our long day! The pedometer I was wearing showed 26,600 steps for the day! We were so happy to get a seat on the train and rest for the ride home! When we got off the train in Slough, we went to Tesco for our weekly grocery shopping, then called for a taxi to take us home! We sure slept good that night!!! :-)
Sunday, we met Ricky, Pat, and Rini. Rini has a car here, so we all squeezed in her TINY LITTLE BITTY car and drove an hour and 15 minutes to Stonehenge! We were so cramped in her car that we couldn’t sit straight up without hitting our heads on the ceiling (even me and we all know how short I am!!!) and our feet were asleep by the time we got there! But it was worth it! Stonehenge was really neat to see…a must see really since we’re this close. It’s incredible to think that they could move those stones back then without all the crazy equipment we have now. They said one stone weighed the same as what 5 elephants would weigh. Geez. They aren’t sure if Stonehenge was meant to somehow worship gods, possible a sun god, or if it had scientific meaning. The sun shines through a different section each month, which is really cool. We squeezed in the little car for the ride home again. We stopped in Windsor to eat dinner at a cool little Pub, where we all got burgers and chicken sandwiches. They were EXPENSIVE, but huge and delicious! What a fun day, spent with really nice people!!!
